World's first music video- Gus Visser and his singing duck
This is one of the oldest music videos made, this particular video I have chosen to focus on was filmed in 1921 and they were working on it up to the release date which was June 1925. In this time they didn't have the technology we have nowadays which is why the quality of video isn't to the standards of music videos that are produced now. Also the music video is in black and white which is different to now as we have the option to film in black and white or colour but colour is more common.
The video was of a man called Gus Visser and his singing pet duck, in the video they were both performing in some sort of show. The sound isn't at high quality because the lack of high tech back then, this makes the video a lower quality as the quality of the sound is not good as well as the quality of the video picture itself. The video is also quite a short music video as it was only 1 minute and 31 seconds long, music videos tend to be over 3 minutes long as this is usually the length of a full song. The difference between music videos now and then is music videos now are based on the music artists themselves or things that the music is based on but in this case the video is an act of a man and his singing duck. Music videos now also have a lot of visual effects edited on to the video once it has been filmed. They also use a range of camera angles where as in this video the camera is positioned in one angle and is all filmed in one shot unlike music videos now that are filmed in lots of different shots and are edited together.
This music video was directed by Theodore Case who was currently working on his sound film process, he did this in New York at the case research Lab. Theodore Case filmed many other videos similar to this particular one such as Miss Manila Martin and her pet Squirrel. These videos were all released around the same time to this video.
